Congratulations to Karen Li on presenting her Honors thesis at the Massachusetts State Undergraduate Research Conference at UMass Amherst on April 28, 2017. Karen is an Operations and Information Management major at the Isenberg School of Management and will graduate in May. The title of her thesis is: Hospital Competition in Prices and Quality: A Variational Inequality Framework. Professor Anna Nagurney was the Chair of her thesis committee with Professor Chaitra Gopalappa of the UMass Amherst College of Engineering at the Co-Chair. We regret to announce that Martin J. Beckmann, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Brown University and Friend of the Center, passed away on April 11, 2017. Professor Beckmann's book, Studies in the Economics of Transportation, co-authored with Professors C. Bart McGuire and Christopher B. Winsten is a Network Classic. The Center Director, Professor Anna Nagurney, has written an essay on Professor Beckman for her blog. The Brown University Economics Department posted an In Memoriam on its website. The Center Director and Center Associates extend their deepest sympathy to the Beckmann family.

Congratulations to the UMass Amherst INFORMS Student Chapter! It has been notified by INFORMS that it will be receiving the Cum Laude Award at the Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee in November. This is the 11th award in as many years that this student chapter has received from INFORMS for its activities. The Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney hs been the chapter's Faculty Advisor since this chapter's inception in 2004. INFORMS began recognizing student chapters in 2006 and the UMass Amherst Student Chapter has always received an award. Kudos to the chapter's officers and member, both past and present!

The Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney chaired Sara's doctoral dissertation. Sara is now an Assistant Professor at the Foisie School of Business at Worcester Polytechinc Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts. Sara is Professor Nagurney's 19th PhD student. The Center Director, Professor Anna Nagurney, is a contributing faculty member to the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) program to train the next national cybersecurity workforce funded by a $4.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to UMass Amherst.

The Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney congratulates the authors and co-authors of the 12 most impactful papers published in the INFORMS journal Transportation Science in the last 50 years. One of the papers is the classic paper, Traffic Equilibrium and Variational Inequalities, written by the Director's dissertation advisor, Professor Stella Dafermos. She has written a blogpost, The Most Impactful Papers in Transportation Science in 50 Years - A Walk Down Memory Lane, expanding on the impacts of these papers from a personal perspective.
