Professor Nagurney is the chair of his dissertation committee.

Professor Ladimer Nagurney presented, A Network Model and Computational Approach for the 99Mo Supply Chain for Nuclear Medicine, at the Fall 2011 Joint Meeting of the New England Sections of the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the Society of Physics Students at UMass Amherst. The presentation is based upon the paper, Medical Nuclear Supply Chain Design: A Tractable Network Model and Computational Approach, co-authored with Professor Anna Nagurney.

The 58th Annual North American Meeting of the Regional Science Association International will be held in Miami, FL from November 9-12, 2011. At the meeting, Professor Anna Nagurney will present at the Memorial Session for Professor Walter Isard who passed away last year. Professor Nagurney's two presentations have been uploaded to Visuals.

We are pleased to announce that the UMass INFORMS Student Chapter has been award the Magna Cum Laude Award. This is the fifth year in a row that the chapter has received an INFORMS award. Professor Anna Nagurney, as Chapter Advisor, salutes the chapter for this distinction and invites all present and former chapter members who will be attending the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Charlotte, NC, later this month, to attend the awards ceremony. Professor Anna Nagurney extends her sincerest appreciation to her hosts during her visit to McGill University in Montreal, Canada, yesterday, especially Professors Vedat Verter and Mehmet Gumus. She enjoyed her visit tremendously.

Her presentation, given in the Management Science Research Seminar Series at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill, entitled, Perishable Product Supply Chains in Health Care: Models, Analysis, and Computation, has been posted on this site.

The project, Collaborative Research: Network Innovation Through Choice, has been funded by the National Science Foundation in the amount of $2.732 million ($909,794 to UMass Amherst) for three years starting on September 15, 2011. This is a collaborative project among the University of Massachusetts (Tilman Wolf and Anna Nagurney), the University of Kentucky (Jim Griffioen and Ken Calvert), RENCI (Ilya Baldine), and NC State (Rudra Dutta and George Rouskas).

Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney was interviewed by the Public Relations officer of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), Mr. Michael Breen, for a podcast on the Center's research work on supply chains in disasters as part of its Mathematical Moments series. Mr. Breen attended Professor Nagurney's presentation at the AAAS meeting in Washington, DC last February and requested an interview. The podcast mentions the Isenberg School and the Virtual Center for Suoernetworks, as well as Center Associates, Min Yu and Professor Patrick Qiang.

Nagurney, has been accepted for publication in Transportation Research E. Also, their paper, Spatial Price Equilibrium and Food Webs: The Economics of Predator-Prey Networks, appears as the lead article in the Proceedings of the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Supernetworks and System Management. Center Associate Professor June Dong is a Co-Editor of these proceedings, which were published by IEEE Press, Beijing, China.

As Chapter Advisor, I'd like to commend last year's and this year's officers (Min Yu, Amir Masoumi, Guven Ince, Farbod Farhadi, Milad Ebtehaj, Ronrapee Leelawong, Nathan Kollett, and Ameera Ibrahim) for their outstanding service. The chapter was ranked second in the nation out of 32 student chapters this year based on its activities. Professor Anna Nagurney's paper, Fragile Networks: Identifying Vulnerabilities and Synergies in an Uncertain Age, joint with Professor Qiang "Patrick" Qiang, which is an invited paper for the journal, International Transactions in Operational Research, and based on her invited tutorial for the ALIO-INFORMS International Meeting, has now been posted. This paper was motivated by the authors' recent research on the topic, as well as by their recent book. It provides a high level synthesis of research on network vulnerability and robustness, as well as synergy associated with network integration.

Wootan award at the CUTC (Council of University Transportation Centers) awards banquet, Saturday evening, January 9, 2010, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. The Wootan Award is given for the best doctoral dissertation, based on a national competition, in the transportation planning and policy category. Dr. Qiang received the award for his dissertation, Network Efficiency / Performance Measurement with Vulnerability and Robustness Analysis with Application to Critical Infrastructure. Dr. Patrick Qiang, Center Associate, May 2009 PhD graduate of UMass and advisee of Professor Anna Nagurney, is the recipient of the Charles V. Wootan Award for his doctoral dissertation, Network Efficiency / Performance Measurement with Vulnerability and Robustness Analysis with Application to Critical Infrastructure. This award is for the best dissertation in transportation planning and policy in the US and is sponsored by the Council of University Transportation Centers, a consortium of over 70 leading research and education programs in transportation. He will be presented with the award at a banquet in Washington DC in January. Congratulations, Dr. Qiang!

Prior to his presentation, the UMass Amherst INFORMS Student Chapter held a reception at the Isenberg School to celebrate its Summa Cum Laude award that it received on October 13, 2009 at the INFORMS Conference in San Diego.

We are honored and delighted that Professor Ellis Johnson of Georgia Tech in Atlanta will be opening up our Spring 2009 INFORMS Speaker Series this coming Friday. He will be speaking on airline challenges and operations research at 11AM in Room ISOM 112. Professor Johnson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has won all the major prizes in the field of operations research, including the Lanchester Prize.

The talks take place on scheduled Fridays in Room 112 in the Isenberg School of Management from 11AM until noon. The speaker series is organized by the award-winning UMass Amherst Student Chapter of INFORMS.
