On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, a symposium to celebrate 1 Year of the UMass Amherst - KSE Partnership will take place virtually from 9-11 EDT. It will begin with remarks by KSE Rector Tymofii Brik, administrators at UMass, and Professor Anna Nagurney, followed by 4 panels on themes: Agricultural Supply Chains in Ukraine in Wartime, Networks and Collaborations,  Conducting Research and Education in Wartime and Addressing Major Challenges in Ukraine in Wartime: From Disability Rights to Disinformation. Panelists will be Scholars in Ukraine supported by the partnership and the panels will be moderated by UMass Faculty Hosts.

Yesterday, it was a pleasure to help host Dr. Tymofiy Mylovanov, President, Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), Kyiv, Ukraine on his visit to UMass Amherst. Many thanks to Dr. Kalpen Trivedi, Vice Provost for Global Affairs, and to his International Programs Office staff,for doing an outstanding job in support of this important visit. Thanks also to the Deans, Center Directors, other administrators and faculty who have supported the UMass Amherst - KSE partnership, which was established during the war, and who met with Dr. Mylovanov yesterday. On February 24, 2023 we mark the anniversary of the major invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Photos of his visit were added to Photos of Center Activities. Kudos to UMass Amherst - we are now providing support to 15 Virtual Scholars in Ukraine who are matched with faculty at UMass. 9 are matched with Isenberg School faculty; 5 are matched with Social and Behavioral Sciences faculty and 1 Virtual Scholar is matched with a faculty member in the Mathematics and Statistics department.

Today it was officially announced at the Transportation Science and Logistics Society virtual business meeting that Professor Stella Dafermos will be honored with the Stella Dafermos Achievement Award in Transportation Science. Professor Anna Nagurney was her first PhD student at Brown University and today delivered a speech in her memory. The slide deck and video recording of the speech are now posted. Professor Nagurney will be the chair of the inaugural Dafermos Award committee.

Karen is an Operations and Information Management major at the Isenberg School of Management and will graduate in May. We regret to announce that Martin J. Beckmann, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Brown University and Friend of the Center, passed away on April 11, 2017. Professor Beckmann's book, Studies in the Economics of Transportation, co-authored with Professors C. Bart McGuire and Christopher B. Winsten is a Network Classic. The Center Director, Professor Anna Nagurney, has written an essay on Professor Beckman for her blog. The Brown University Economics Department posted an In Memoriam on its website. The Center Director and Center Associates extend their deepest sympathy to the Beckmann family.

Congratulations to the UMass Amherst INFORMS Student Chapter! It has been notified by INFORMS that it will be receiving the Cum Laude Award at the Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee in November. This is the 11th award in as many years that this student chapter has received from INFORMS for its activities. The Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney hs been the chapter's Faculty Advisor since this chapter's inception in 2004. INFORMS began recognizing student chapters in 2006 and the UMass Amherst Student Chapter has always received an award. Kudos to the chapter's officers and member, both past and present!

Congratulations to Doctoral Student Center Associate Sara Saberi who today successfully defended her doctoral dissertation with a concentration in Management Science at the Isenberg School of Management. The Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney chaired Sara's doctoral dissertation. Sara is now an Assistant Professor at the Foisie School of Business at Worcester Polytechinc Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts. Sara is Professor Nagurney's 19th PhD student. Her presentation and photos from the defense are on the site.

The Center Director Professor Anna Nagurney congratulates the authors and co-authors of the 12 most impactful papers published in the INFORMS journal Transportation Science in the last 50 years. One of the papers is the classic paper, Traffic Equilibrium and Variational Inequalities, written by the Director's dissertation advisor, Professor Stella Dafermos. She has written a blogpost, The Most Impactful Papers in Transportation Science in 50 Years - A Walk Down Memory Lane, expanding on the impacts of these papers from a personal perspective.
