December 22, 2002 - It is with deep regret and sorrow that the Virtual Center for Supernetworks acknowledges the passing of Professor Vladimir (Val) Haensel. Professor Haensel was a scholar and a true gentleman who was a role model to several generations of scholars. Professor Haensel was a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering. President Nixon presented him the National Medal of Science. In 1997 he was the fifth recipient of the Charles Stark Draper Prize, the engineering profession's highest honor, "for improving the welfare and prosperity of society through the development of duo-function catalysis, a revolutionary chemical engineering process that in an environmentally benign way created clean, abundant transportation fuel, enabled the modern plastics industry, and globally improved the standard of living." Professor Haensel's photo and a link to his obituary can be found in Photos of Network Innovators. The wisdom and advice from Professor Haensel can be reflected in two quotes from interviews, "If we are not challenging ourselves, we're not taking advantage of what life offers" and "Work to produce something important. Do something new. Do something interesting, something that makes you want to shout out loud when you've got it. Life is too darn amazing - and too short - for anything less." The director and associates extend their sympathy to his wife, Dr. Hertha Haensel, and to his family.
